Cardiothoracic conditions we treat
We take a compassionate approach to cardiothoracic surgery. Our surgeons thoughtfully and carefully treat various conditions, such as:
- Empyema
- Lung cancer
- Lung nodules
- Mediastinal tumors
- Pleural space diseases
Dedicated cardiothoracic surgery program
Our specialized medical professionals coordinate your care while you undergo treatment for lung cancer or other chest-related malignancies. We work together towards positive outcomes and successfully administer crucial diagnostic tests and surgical procedures, as needed.
Our cardiothoracic services and treatments
We continuously prioritize growing our program and proficiencies so we can provide you with the best possible care. The skilled technologists and physicians at our facility have met and exceeded stringent guidelines, and our program has been recognized for:
- Accredited lung cancer screening center by the American College of Radiology (ACR)
- Nurse navigators who guide you before surgery and throughout recovery
- Respiratory specialists licensed by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and the state of New Hampshire
- Surgeons who are board certified in cardiac, general, thoracic and vascular surgery
- Three-star designation from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS)
Lung cancer screenings
In our radiology department, we typically perform simple, advanced low-dose computerized tomography (CT) procedures to detect lung cancer as early as possible.
You may be eligible for one of these screenings if you:
- Are between 50 and 77 years old
- Currently smoke
- Have a history of smoking in the last 20 years
If you meet the above criteria, we recommend speaking with your primary doctor about getting an order for a low-dose CT lung screening.
Robot-assisted thoracic surgery
We are home to one of the most renowned robotic surgery programs in the area, with our surgeons having decades of experience using minimally invasive, robot-assisted technology. With this type of surgery, you might benefit from a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.
This technology enables our surgeons to precisely remove concerning lung masses or tumors via small incisions, without disturbing the rest of the chest cavity. During your procedure, we will use long-acting local anesthetics and cryoanalgesia. This process freezes the nerve endings at the surgical site to reduce discomfort, without the need for narcotics.
Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)
Similar to robot-assisted thoracic surgery, VATS has the potential to achieve shorter healing times and less soreness than open procedures. During your procedure, we will use a small camera (thoracoscope), specialized tools, cryoanalgesia and regional anesthesia.
