Our advanced heart arrhythmia services
Our doctors take a compassionate approach to cardiac care. Whenever possible, we use minimally invasive techniques to provide you with potential health benefits, such as a quicker recovery and less scarring.
Types of arrhythmias we treat
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), five million Americans are estimated to be living with atrial fibrillation (AFib) — the most common type of heart arrhythmia today. AFib occurs when faulty electrical contraction impulses cause a fast, irregular heartbeat. This condition can reduce your heart’s ability to effectively pump blood, which may lead to blood clots and other complications if left untreated.
Our team of specialized cardiologists can diagnose and address various types of arrhythmias, including:
- Atrial flutter
- Paroxysmal, persistent and permanent AFib
- Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)
Diagnostic tests we perform
To confirm your diagnosis, we use the latest technologies and techniques, such as:
- Echocardiogram
- Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)
- Electrophysiology (EP) study
- Holter monitor
- Implantable loop recorder
- Stress test
Treatment options for AFib
For AFib, we work to eliminate your symptoms and reduce the likelihood of associated issues through leading-edge treatments that include:
- Ablation — This minimally invasive surgery can block problematic electrical signals and eliminate abnormal heart rhythms.
- Cardioversion — By using an external defibrillator, this method delivers a shock to the heart and restores your usual rhythm.
- Convergent therapy — If medications and catheter ablation fail to fully treat persistent AFib, this minimally invasive procedure works to restore rhythm with ablation inside and outside your heart. It combines work in the cardiovascular operating room and EP lab.
- Implantable loop monitor — To locate and monitor an arrhythmia, we may implant this type of recording device underneath your skin.
- Left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) — This minimally invasive procedure works to seal off the LAA to prevent blood clots, reduce your risk of stroke and eliminate your need for blood thinners.
- Lifestyle modifications — Depending on your well-being, changes in alcohol consumption, diet, exercise and smoking can have such positive impacts that more serious intervention may not be needed.
- Maze procedure — The Maze procedure can be used during traditional heart surgery to treat coronary artery or heart valve disease. It can also be used by itself as a minimally invasive treatment for AFib. During this procedure, we create a maze-like pattern of scar tissue that disrupts abnormal electrical signals.
- Medication — To control your arrhythmia and lower your risk for stroke, we may prescribe you medications, such as blood thinners.
- Pacemaker — Implanted under your skin, this single device can monitor your heart rhythm and send electrical signals to control it.
